The Story
Why FontHound
More Than a Name
FontHound is more than a name—it's inspired by a story that stretches back to Roman times.
For centuries, the Irish Wolfhound was renowned as one of the world's greatest hunting dogs, bred to protect Ireland by tracking and bringing down wolves and other large game. As wolves disappeared from Ireland, so too did the breed's purpose. By the middle of the nineteenth century, the Irish Wolfhound had been driven to the brink of extinction.
Then came Captain George Augustus Graham.
Beginning in 1863, Captain Graham dedicated himself to restoring the legendary breed. By carefully crossbreeding the remaining Irish Wolfhounds with Scottish Deerhounds, Great Danes and Borzois, he successfully rebuilt the breed while preserving its defining characteristics. His work culminated in the founding of the Irish Wolfhound Club in 1885, securing the future of one of Ireland's most iconic dogs.
That same spirit lives on in FontHound.
Like its namesake, FontHound has been bred to hunt. Instead of tracking wolves across the Irish countryside, it tracks your typefaces across the web, documents and images. Give FontHound the scent of your font, and let it do what it was built to do—find what others miss.
Under the Hood
FontHound has been built from the ground up with one purpose: to sniff out font misuse.
Available as a desktop application, FontHound lets you upload individual font files or build your own complete font catalogue, giving the hounds everything they need to recognise your typefaces wherever they appear.
Choose how you want to search. Add your own list of suspected websites for targeted investigations, or, with the Professional and Studio editions, connect to the FontHound community databases. Search websites reported by other users or scan our continuously expanding database of over one million web pages, giving you the flexibility to validate suspicious sites or perform large-scale searches with just a few clicks.
FontHound doesn't just analyse websites. You can also upload images and PDF documents for advanced font recognition using our multi-engine OCR technology. Simply take a photo, save a screenshot or upload a document, and FontHound will quickly analyse it against your font library to identify potential matches.
Behind the scenes, FontHound combines metadata matching, CSS and JavaScript analysis, multi-engine OCR image recognition and intelligent confidence scoring to examine every webpage, image and document it processes. The results are presented in a clean, easy-to-understand report, helping you quickly identify potential misuse.
For Professional and Studio users, FontHound can also enrich results with publicly available contact information where possible, making it quicker and easier to reach the organisations or individuals responsible for any suspected infringements.
Every edition of FontHound allows you to export results to CSV. Professional and Studio users can also export reports in JSON and PDF formats. To maintain a consistent corporate identity, you can even upload your own company branding, allowing PDF reports to be generated with your logo and visual identity already applied.
